Some data never needs to leave your computer to be analysed. With BumbleB Crunch Desktop or BumbleB Acorn for VS Code, BumbleB Crunch™ reads your Postgres database, MongoDB collections, or CSV and Parquet files where they are. This page explains what that means for your data.
Your tables stay where they are
Your tables are never copied to your BumbleB Crunch workspace or to ours. A conversation runs its queries on your computer, through the app, and only the results of those queries travel.
One exception stays on your computer too: a MongoDB collection is pulled into the app’s own folder so it can be read as a table. It’s deleted when you remove that connection.
What BumbleB Crunch sees
- The tables you tick, and nothing else. For each one: its name, its columns and its size.
- The rows its queries return, as many as the analysis needs to work out the answer.
- Your questions and the conversation, which are saved to your BumbleB Crunch account so you can reopen them, together with what BumbleB Crunch learns about your tables to answer you.
What stays on your computer
- Your connections. Passwords and connection strings are kept in your computer’s own keychain (the macOS Keychain, Windows Credential Manager, or your Linux keyring), not sent to us.
- The results a conversation keeps, the tables behind its answers. They’re deleted after 30 days without use, or when you delete the conversation or the results.
- The query log, a record of every query run on your data, with its SQL.
It only reads
Every query is checked to be a single read-only statement before it runs, and a Postgres database is attached read-only. BumbleB Crunch can’t change or delete your data this way.
Heads up: an app can reach whatever your connection can. Connect with a database user that sees only the data you want analysed, ideally a read-only one.
Say yes to each query, if you want to
You can be asked before each query BumbleB Crunch wants to run: Approve each query in BumbleB Crunch Desktop, and the Acorn: Approve Each Query setting in VS Code. It’s off by default. A query nobody answers within about five minutes isn’t run.
Only on the computer it lives on
Data on your computer is only read on that computer. BumbleB Crunch in a web browser or on a phone never reaches it, and a conversation that reads it is marked with the computer it reads on.
