BumbleB Crunch Desktop is BumbleB Crunch™ in its own window on your Mac, with one thing the web app can’t do: read the data on that computer. Your Postgres database, your MongoDB collections, a folder of CSV or Parquet files — you ask about them in plain language and BumbleB Crunch queries them where they live, read-only, with every query logged.
It’s the same BumbleB Crunch you use in the browser: the same conversations, datasets, sheets and dashboards, and one sign-in. Local data simply becomes one more thing you can pick.
What you’ll need
- A BumbleB Crunch account — sign up free if you don’t have one.
- A Mac, with Apple silicon or Intel. The app is currently a Preview for macOS; Windows and Linux are coming. On another computer, use BumbleB Crunch in VS Code.
Install and sign in
- Download the app from bumbleb.co/download — pick Mac with Apple silicon or Mac with Intel — open the .dmg and drag the app to Applications. In BumbleB Crunch in your browser, Data → This laptop links to the same page.
- The first time only: the Preview isn’t signed by Apple yet, so macOS says it can’t verify the app. Click Done, then open System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll down and click Open Anyway beside BumbleB Crunch Desktop, and confirm with your password.
- Open it and click Sign in. Your browser opens so you can sign in with your BumbleB Crunch account, as you do on the web, then hands you back to the app.
- The app also signs in on its own to answer BumbleB Crunch’s queries on this computer. If This laptop says the app isn’t signed in, click Sign in there.
Connect your data
- Open Data → This laptop and click Add connection.
- Choose the Kind — Postgres, MongoDB, or files — and fill in its details: a connection string, or host, port, database and user for Postgres; a folder, or one path per line, for CSV and Parquet files. Click Test to check it first.
- The app asks Add a connection?, naming the connection and what it reads. Click Add connection. Only you, at your computer, can confirm it — a page can’t add one on its own.
- Under the connection, tick the tables BumbleB Crunch may read. Only ticked tables are offered to the analyst.
Ask
Start a new conversation and open the datasets picker: the tables you ticked are listed under This laptop. Pick the ones you need and ask, as you would about any dataset.
How to tell it worked
The connection shows Ready in This laptop, and its tables appear in the picker. A conversation that reads them is marked with a laptop icon in your conversation list, with the name of the computer it reads on.
Approve each query
If you’d like a say on every query, turn on Approve each query in This laptop or from the app’s icon in your menu bar or system tray. Each query BumbleB Crunch wants to run then waits for you, in Approvals and as a notification:
- Run once runs this query.
- Always run this runs it, and stops asking for that connection.
- Don’t run turns it down. A query nobody answers within about five minutes isn’t run.
See every query
This laptop → Queries lists every query run on this computer’s data, by you or by BumbleB Crunch, newest first: whether it’s done, refused, failed or you chose not to run it, what it read, how many rows and how long it took. Click one to see its SQL. The list updates as each query starts and ends, and keeps the last 200. The log stays on this computer.
Keep it running
Closing the window keeps the app running, so a conversation that’s working on your data can finish. The app’s icon in the menu bar has Open BumbleB Crunch, Approve each query, Keep running in background, Start at login and Quit BumbleB Crunch Desktop. Keep running in background is on to start with.
Good to know
- It only reads. Every query is checked to be one read-only statement, and passwords stay in your computer’s keychain. See Your data on your computer.
- Only on this computer. A conversation that reads this computer’s data can only carry on here.
Opened in a browser or on another computer, it says
“Continue on
, in BumbleB Crunch Desktop”. - Kept results — the tables behind an answer — stay on your computer and are removed after 30 days without use.
- Updates download in the background and install when you quit the app.
